The Regional District of Bulkley-Nechako is home to eight municipalities including Vanderhoof, Fort St. James, Fraser LakeBurns Lake, Granisle, Houston, Telkwa, Smithers, and surrounding rural areas. It is centrally located between Prince George and Prince Rupert, boasting a connected transportation and communication network, prosperous forestry, mining, agriculture, and tourism industries and extensive year-round recreational opportunities for residents. Timber harvesting and lumber production are the dominant components of the local economy. There are many new opportunities to diversify the forest sector including pulp and pellet plant operations, bioenergy facilities, and value added wood production including furniture manufacturing, cabinetry, fence posts production and many others, all waiting to be further explored.

The Regional District of Bulkley-Nechako is well positioned to support and expand the existing mining sector. It has well developed transportation and industrial infrastructure including close proximity to a deep water port, a well maintained highway system and CN Rail lines that link our Region to terminal ports across North America. This coupled with the Province of BC’s attractive energy costs, well-trained and experienced labour force and untapped mineral resources makes this region full of unexplored mining opportunities.

Agricultural activities in the Region related to dairy, livestock and forage production. There is opportunity for growth in the beef and cattle industry as the long history of ranching in the area has developed much of the required infrastructure for successful farming. The opportunities for large scale greenhouse operations are also on the rise in the Region, due to the growing bioenergy sector which provides low cost heating alternatives.

Tourism opportunities within the Regional District of Bulkley-Nechako are limitless. Tourism resources include high quality recreation fishing opportunities, abundant and diverse wildlife, high mountainous terrain for trail development and climbing, swift flowing rivers and beautifully calm lakes. Given the diverse geographic terrain, location on a main transportation corridor and robust natural beauty, future growth in the tourism sector is projected.

Local Infrastructure Projects

The Province of BC and the Stuart Nechako Regional Hospital District will be investing approximately $50 million to build a new hospital in Burns Lake.  The hospital will improve health services to residents and create local jobs.

The geophysical study has identified the mineral potential of over 40,000 square kilometers from Vanderhoof to Fort St. James and Terrace to Kitimat. The QUEST-West region has excellent potential for molybdenum, copper, gold and silver mineralization.

The Province is investing $14.3 million in 14 different highway infrastructure improvements in the Nechako Lakes region, to improve safety for local residents and commercial drivers.

As part of the ongoing community rebuilding effort, the Province of BC is providing $2.4 million to expand a recreation centre in Burns Lake that will create jobs and support healthy family activities.
