Northwest Regional Airport Expansion
The Northwest Regional Airport Terrace-Kitimat is located 10km west of the Northwest British Columbia City of Terrace. With airport passenger traffic growing approximately by 65% between 2011 and 2013, the Northwest Regional Airport implemented a 20 Master Plan this year, to ensure it is positioned to service the region that is expected to see economic growth for the next decade.
About This Project
The Northwest Regional Airport Terrace-Kitimat has begun the implementation of its 20 year Master Plan. Through an exercise of forecasting and research into what the demands of the region will look like 20 years out, a phased growth plan has been developed. This plan will not consider providing the services for a construction boom, but rather the needs of the community in the future. Long term developments in the mining and tourism industries as well as Rio Tinto and the organic growth of the community and catchment area have been taken into consideration.
The first phase will include expansion of both the Air Terminal Facility and long term parking. The Air Terminal will see its 15,000 sq. foot building nearly double in size and will include a new and larger check-in area with relocated airline offices, a new checked baggage drop facility and an enlarged security lounge. In addition, there will be 3 gates to serve the public and a covered walkway that will bring travelers closer to the aircraft, allowing for limited outside exposure. Long term parking will be expanded to accommodate 800 vehicles up from 500. A Third aircraft stand will be commissioned in October 2014 which will allow more convenient queuing for the airlines.
The budgeted cost is $15 million and will be paid for through the first ever Airport Improvement Fee of $7.00 per outgoing passenger. Other funding opportunities are being sought of which Northern Development Initiative Trust has pledged $250,000 for both the apron expansion and the air terminal expansion totaling $500,000 towards the final cost.
Already the largest regional airport in Northwest British Columbia, this expansion will enable the airport to continue its placement, as well service the expected population growth due to the massive economic development projected for the region and the ever increasing popularity of backcountry skiing, world class fishing, kite surfing, mountain biking, and white water kayaking in our majestic community.
The completion of this project is anticipated to be spring of 2016.
